Neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s Disease (PD), affect many of the body’s functions such as balance and movement. They can also have a profound effect on communication abilities, with the majority of patients suffering from some form of vocal impairment, usually a difficulty in modulating vocal intensity. These speech difficulties can impact social relationships, participation in conversations and overall quality of life. Although therapy can be implemented to help with this, self-monitoring of vocal intensity, particularly in different environments can be difficult outside of therapy.
Researchers at Arizona State University and collaborators have developed a novel discrete biofeedback system catering to individuals challenged by speech disorders, particularly those originating from neurodegenerative diseases like PD. This system offers real-time guidance for modulating vocal intensity utilizing vibrotactile feedback. Speech patterns and ambient sounds are captured, filtered, and interpreted by a responsive controller that generates tailored vibrotactile feedback through a vibration motor. The vibrotactile intensity can be adjusted to suit user preferences.
This system provides immediate guidance on adapting vocal intensity to ambient noise to enable effective and independent communication without external intervention. Further, its discreet design ensures seamless integration into daily life, enhancing communication and fostering inclusivity and confidence for those with speech difficulties.
Potential Applications
-
Feedback to help with speech modulation
-
Particularly useful in patients with neurodegenerative diseases like PD, but also helpful for patients with brain injury, vocal fold paralysis/injury, and other conditions affecting speech
-
Benefits and Advantages
-
Discreet/invisible design provides feedback but does not interfere with normal communication patterns
-
Helps to reduce social anxiety around communication issues
-
Device is also designed for user comfort
-
-
Utilizes a rechargeable battery for convenience and longevity
-
Analyzes for the presence of background noise and provides biofeedback relative to the ambient noise levels
-
Provides vibrotactile feedback when the wearer’s vocal intensity falls out of the defined range (either too soft or too loud)
-
Personalized – allows for user adjustments of the strength of the vibrotactile feedback
-
Feedback is provided to the user for immediate voice adjustment with minimal mental effort and/or training
